Large antique gilt mirror, used to hang over the fireplace in my Father's large dining room. 57" tall by 32" wide with a Cherub on top and fish at the sides. The mirror sparkles and has a blue gray backing, indicative of mercury backed glass. Fair condition; cherub needs repair and the mirror itself has black spots.Made of wood and plaster, weighs around 40 lbs.
It was in my Father's house
Good morning, Mr. Creery,
Thank you for submitting photographs for appraisal at Mearto.
Your carved giltwood and gesso mirror is in the French taste, late 19th or early 20th century. It is modeled after a style popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The fish in the lower corners are dolphins, which was a very popular motif in the early 19th century. It appears to have some losses to the gilded gesso and wood, which does detract from the value a little.
I hope this information has been useful to you. Please let us know if you have additional questions and thank you again for using Mearto.
