Eagle sculpture
04 January 2018
Description

This sculpture appears to be made from iron.its approximately 5" long and weighs about 13 ounces. Hand carved depiction of an eagle landing on a tree branch. Very detailed and ornate. I would love to know how old it is and what the writing says enverso.

What does this mean?

This is an antique Asian ink stone which is used for holding the ink used for calligraphy and ink painting with brushes. It is a hand carved stone piece (not cast or molded iron), usually mined Duan stone, which has a very fine and dense grain. Ink stones were associated with scholars, in China, the Scholar has their four scholarly tools - which are brushes, ink, ink stones and paper. Dry ink stick are ground into the most shallow part or the well and water is in the deeper area, then they are combined to create the black ink. I have sent the signature out for identification, though cannot guarantee this calligraphy can be translated. The estimate is based on actual past auction sales of comparables of 19th century Chinese ink duan ink stones.
