Large Vase with hand painted birds
09 June 2018
Description

This is a double-handled vase with 4 feet. It appears to be ceramic or a type of pottery. It is a light gray-steel blue in color. The front is covered with a hand painted design of a bird and its nest among some flowers. On the back is a smaller design of some flowers. There is a small mark on the bottom that is a number (609). It was found in a cupboard while cleaning out my in-laws estate. My 64 year husband remembers it as a child. It is 14 inches in height, 4 1/2 inches wide, and 4 inches deep.

Provenance

We acquired it when we were cleaning out my in-laws estate. My husband thinks it originally came from his grandparents.

What does this mean?

This is a tall 14" antique, 19th century, Victorian era double handled molded porcelain vase with detailed decoration of a variety of flowers and a bird perched on twig over a nest with eggs. The glaze and the hyper-pigmented colors of the decoration are a bit unusual for the age. The decoration, however is transferprinted with some hand embellishing. The mold impressioned number, 609 on the underside is the mold form pattern 'name'. This cannot be traced to a market. The lack of country of origin stamp and overall style dates this to just about 1890 and not later than 1893. Generally, these were produced in France and Germany and would be catalogued as 'Continental'. Although the gold is real, there is no longer a precious metal meltdown value as the cost to extract the gold would exceed the value of the amount extracted. The estimate is based on actual recent past recorded auction sales of comparables. Retail 'asking prices' can be higher and vary.
