What does this mean?

The appraised work is a two-piece plaid suit, consisting of a buttoned blazer with silk lining and matching skirt, designed by André Courrèges (1923-2016), likely created in the early 1970s.

After working with Balenciaga as an assistant designer, Courrèges rose to prominence in the early 1960s when he established his own couture house in Paris. Making a concerted effort to appeal to members of the ‘Youthquake’ movement, who favored direct ties to popular culture, Courrèges, along with other designers like Yves Saint Laurent, embraced these references and subsequent freedoms. He was well-known for incorporating clean lines with geometric shapes and silhouettes. He tended to favor neutral palettes, but also experimented with bright colors and bold patterns.

The estimate provided is based on comparables recently offered and sold at auction. In many cases, prices for similar examples available on the primary (retail) market vary and are often higher than secondary (auction) market examples.
