Chinese Temple Jar w/Cover
11" high by 11" wide, circa 1860 hexagonal jar covered by a small hexagonal cover w/diam ond smaped finnial highlighted in 24 Kt gold. each side has handpainted scenes of court people/foliage/birds
purchased at antique store in Waldorf Astoria (Charles Adams Importers) by my father (deceased) in 1984.

Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. This appears to be a chinese hexagonal jar in the manner of canton ware, produced in or sold through Hong Kong in the 1980s. These rather crude reproductions appeared shortly after Deng Xiaoping took over. They were quite often sold in luxury hotels, which has been the case here as well. Soon after they were sold on "antiques" fairs. Similar would sell well below fifty USD at auction today. Viewed from a western point of view this has to be considered a fake unfortunately, with only a decorative value. There is no measurement for the sentimental value you might attach to it.
Please feel and add a photo of the base. But there is zero chance that this is old. I assume some bitumen/ oil solution was smeared on the surface to make it look old. Try to remove with petrol. If there is soluble dirt you can be sure for certain that this is new.
Hi, Klaus. Sorry for the delay in this. How certain are you that this particular vase may not be authentic (e.g. would other pictures of the base, etc. be helpful for you???) No problem if you are certain but I do have an appraisal (done by the hotel's antique store appraiser -- who may have been in cahoots with the luxury store hotel antique store!!) listing at thousands of dollars. No problem if it is fake, I just want to be certain before I just give it away to a friend!!! Thanks so much -- your appraisal does make perfect sense.
