Oriental Moon Shaped Hand Fan painting
05 February 2019
Description

Painting of 'magnolias in water' using at least 3 colors. Painted on gold silk. Believe it is Chinese. Likely 19th century. The frame and handle is hand carved bamboo. Haven't got it appraised as of yet so no idea what the ballpark value is. It is truly a beautiful piece to look at with rich symbolism both in the painting itself and the medium (moon shaped/ceremonial hand fan).

Provenance

I found it at a dump here in Tennessee.

What does this mean?

Dear mister Phipps,

Indeed this is a Chinese fan with a Bamboo frame and painted on silk. Its made in the region Canton what was famous for its Fan making ( beside of also other things like porcelain and carving of Ivory ) The fan is dated 1923 in Chinese characters, so made in Republic period in China. Its also signed by the artist but I do not know the maker. It seems not so important since its made not as art object but mainly to use in daily life. Painting is fast and well done but a little simple and also the carving is quite basic. These fans are very sought after if they are painted very detailed and fine. Yours is of medium quality and due to the damage I think the above mentioned estimate is fair.

Ok. Well that's kinda a bummer. Was hoping it would be in the 4 digit area. Thanks though. I would ask, who is the artist? If the artist is identified could not the value increase of the artist is famous or has family members or followers that would desire this piece? How could it better be marketed/marketing strategies? Could it have belonged to royalty since the magnolia s are purple? Where to sell this the easiest? But where and how to sell to get the most out of it?

Hi Jamie, Sorry for the delay. I could not find the artist any were. Could well be a local name. I'm sorry I cannot help out on that one. The qaulity of the total obect does not raise a question on wether it should be to a dignity of any importance is my honest idea.

Selling a pice like this can be done in several places. Online platforms but also a local auction house can do the trick. If this auction house is cooperating with Invaluable, Lot-tissimo or Live auctioneers you can be pretty sure the right buyers will find it.

Good luck with it !
