Description

A few like it on the web say bone, I had it listed for sale and it was removed saying it was ivory. Now we don’t know. Damage was repaired, but not professionally missing end cap. But many others online have the same damage or in worse shape.

What does this mean?

Thank you for submitting your item for appraisal. As you have already found out, the tanto grip and scabbard was made from bone. You will notice tiny black lines / open canals in the bone structure, the so called Volkmann´s canals. Real ivory show Schreger lines, they are not visible here. These Tanto were made purely for export to western countries using inexpensive material. They were inexpensive a hundred years ago and this has not changed today.
The estimate is based on similar sold at auction.
